Welcome to Year 1!
Our new topic this half term will be...
Beside the seaside!
In English, we will be reading a variety of fantasy stories with the theme of pirates! Our first story will be 'Class 3 all at Sea!' In this story, a class trip goes slightly wrong when pirate 'Bogey Nose' takes over the school boat! We will also be looking at the features of letter writing and sending seaside themed postcards!
In maths, we will continue solving problems involving multiplication and division using practical resources, drawings and arrays. We will use the language related to addition and subtraction and symbols to describe and record addition and subtraction number sentences. We will also be focusing upon measures, learning about weight, length and capacity.
In our topic work, we will be learning all about the science of materials; distinguishing between objects and what they are made from. We will also be learning about the geography of the seaside, holidays there in the past and present, as well as the life of a lady called Grace Darling.
In art we will be studying sea shells and creating observational drawings of these. We will also study the artist Mike Kingston and try to recreate one of his pieces.
In the past couple of weeks we have been learning about seaside holidays in the Victorian times. Here are some photos of us dressing up in our Victorian Sunday best, for a day on the promenade!
It is believed that smiles were rarely seen on Victorian photos because of the long exposure times and early photography being heavily influenced by painting-which meant no smiling!
We have been using purple mash to create animations of the life cycle of a plant!
